Common drywall removal problems

The problem.
How we solve it.

What we check on every drywall job, and how we handle each one.

01

Older buildings and asbestos

The problem

Asbestos cannot be identified by appearance alone. In older buildings, it may be present in drywall joint compound and ceiling texture.

How we solve it

Suspect materials must be identified by a qualified person and tested. Identified asbestos must be handled by properly licensed and certified asbestos professionals.

02

Hidden wiring and pipes

The problem

Drywall can conceal electrical wiring, plumbing, gas lines, ductwork and other building systems.

How we solve it

Electrical circuits must be identified and made safe, and plumbing and gas lines confirmed, before demolition.

03

Water damage behind the wall

The problem

Moisture behind drywall can result in concealed mould, damaged insulation or deteriorated framing.

How we solve it

Tell us before the project. Significant mould may need a qualified remediation contractor before general demolition continues.

04

Dust and sharp debris

The problem

Drywall removal creates dust, sharp edges and large amounts of awkward debris.

How we solve it

We plan a controlled work area, protect floors along the removal route and keep occupants away from demolition.

05

Used drywall with disposal rules

The problem

Disposal facilities can have specific testing, packaging and documentation requirements for used gypsum.

How we solve it

We confirm applicable hauling and disposal requirements before accepting the material. Keep used drywall out of general garbage.

06

Something unexpected turns up

The problem

Renovation work can uncover materials that were concealed during the original assessment.

How we solve it

Work in the affected area stops and the material is left undisturbed until a qualified professional assesses or tests it.
